Starting Kindergarten
Starting school is a big step for children and families. Our school runs orientation and transition activities to help your child feel ready for Kindergarten and to support you as parents and carers.
Before your child starts Kindergarten
Book in a tour of our wonderful school
We warmly welcome new families to Peakhurst West Public School, where we are dedicated to creating opportunities for every student’s success. We invite you to come and explore our wonderful school with a guided tour to discover why we are an excellent choice for your child’s educational journey.
Tours are held on Wednesday mornings from 10:00am to 10:30am. Please meet us at the school office, with entry via Ogilvy Street, Peakhurst.
Enrolment Interview
Before your child begins at our school, all families meet with our principal and teachers to share important information such as medical conditions or allergies, learning support needs, and family circumstances that may affect your child’s start. This meeting ensures we understand your child’s individual needs and helps us create a safe, supportive, and inclusive school environment where every child can thrive.
Attend the Kindergarten Orientation
Our Kindergarten Orientation program is designed to welcome new students, support a smooth transition, and help families become familiar with our school community. Orientation sessions offer the opportunity to meet teachers, explore classrooms, and engage in fun learning activities. We look forward to meeting our new Kindergarten families and ensuring a confident, happy start to school.
Parent Information Session During Kindergarten Orientation
While children are engaged in activities with their classroom teachers during Kindergarten Orientation, parents are invited to attend an information session. This session provides valuable insights into our school’s programs, routines, and support services. It’s a great opportunity for parents to ask questions, meet key staff members, and learn how to best support their child’s transition to school. We encourage all parents to participate and become familiar with our welcoming school community.

- get dressed independently
- pack, unpack, and carry their school bag

What to expect in Kindergarten
Learning and development
Kindergarten follows the NSW curriculum. Children build early skills in literacy, numeracy, creative arts, health and physical activity, science and technology. Learning through play also supports social, emotional and academic growth.
Daily routines
Children become familiar with daily routines like arriving in the morning, snack and lunch breaks, lining up, using water fountains, and moving safely around the school. While teachers support and guide children as they adjust, practicing these routines at home can be very helpful.
K-2 Play Areas
Our K–2 play areas feature nature-inspired spaces and a variety of play equipment designed to support both fine and gross motor skill development. Children can climb, balance, and explore, while also enjoying imaginative and hands-on activities that encourage creativity and social interaction in a safe, natural environment.
Dedicated teachers
Our dedicated teachers are passionate about early childhood education and creating a supportive, welcoming environment for every student. They guide, encourage, and nurture children as they learn, helping each child build confidence and reach their potential.
Kindergarten Buddies Program
Kindergarten students are paired with Year 5 and 6 buddies to help them feel welcome and supported as they settle into school. Buddies spend time together on fun activities, building friendships and confidence. This connection helps younger students learn school routines and fosters a caring, inclusive school community.
Events
Kindergarten is filled with special events, excursions, incursions and celebrations that make each year memorable and fun. Highlights include our colourful Book Parade, where children dress up as favourite characters, and the “100 Days of Kindergarten” celebration, marking a milestone in their learning journey. These exciting activities build a strong sense of community, encourage creativity, and make school a joyful experience for every child.
Classrooms
Our Kindergarten classrooms are filled with engaging resources to support early learning and creativity. Children enjoy bright, welcoming spaces and access to a range of materials and activities. Outside, our safe and inviting playgrounds give students daily opportunities for active play, social interaction, and exploration.
Best Start Assessment
At the start of the year, all Kindergarten children take part in the Best Start Assessment. This is a friendly, one-on-one activity where teachers learn about your child’s literacy and numeracy skills. It is not a test and needs no preparation.
